“If there is magic on this planet, it is contained in water.” — Loren Eiseley

Any alien life visiting us would be extremely confused about the fact that our planet is called the Earth, even though it is 2/3rd water. In this water there are creatures of magical existence, unfathomable in awe and undeniably alien to land-based life.

Whales, dolphins, and porpoises together are called cetaceans. Cetaceans evolved from "hoofed" terrestrial ancestors and they share common features like fins, tails and blowholes, making them appear more like fish than their closest relative, the Hippo.

Cetaceans are not fish. They are mammals just like humans. They breathe air and are warm blooded. It is difficult for us (being land based mammals) to understand cetaceans like we understand elephants or tigers, but their lore and enchantment has driven many to pursue a career in cetacean research and uncover many of their secrets. Thank god for such people!

Cetaceans come in all shapes and sizes and are found all around the planet. Here, we have created interactive maps to help visualise and compare the distribution of different species of whales, dolphins, and porpoises, while also providing a size-wise comparison of them.
